25th Anniversary Of The Steel March

03 January 2011

Today is the 25th anniversary of the march from Scotland to London to save the Gartcosh Strip Mill and the Ravenscraig Steel Works from closure.

Twelve men made the journey and today the survivors, and the widows of the men who have died, will gather in Motherwell to mark the anniversary.

They will break bread together and swallow a few drams as they remember the 10-day walk in freezing conditions.

As a young journalist, I wrote about the march and the hard-fought battle to save the Scottish steel industry.

It was a fight the people of Scotland eventually lost but the heroic campaign by the steelmen of Scotland will never be forgotten.
