Laurna Takes Royal Racing Yacht On “Maiden Voyage”

13 July 2011

Laurna Woods, managing director of PR agency Beattie Communications, is to take the Royal Racing Yacht Bloodhound on its "maiden voyage" following a total refit of the racing vessel.

Accompanying Laurna on the trip between Oban and Mull on Monday, July 11 will be seven of the PR agency's clients.

She said: "Beattie Communications hosted the first ever "public" Burns Supper onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia when she first came to Edinburgh as a tourist attraction, so I was keen to host a special trip onboard her sister ship the Bloodhound.

"One of the yachtsmen who crewed for the Queen, Prince Philip and the Royal family will be aboard on the day to make the journey even more memorable."

Built in the 1930s, the ocean racing yacht was owned by the Queen and Prince Philip in the 1960s.

Built by the famous Camper & Nicholsons yard in Gosport, Bloodhound was one of the most successful ocean racing yachts ever built, winning scores of races in England and Bermuda.

During her ownership by the Royal Family, Bloodhound would accompany Britannia around the Western Isles when the family had their one true family holiday each year.

Bloodhound was sold in 1969 and not replaced. She fell into considerable disrepair before being meticulously restored by Tony and Cindy McGrail of Poole.

She was purchased by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust in 2010 and after a summer season off the west coast of Scotland will return to Edinburgh to become the centrepiece of the Royal Sailing exhibition.
