You might have written the greatest blog post ever – but you’re screaming into a hurricane if you don’t learn how to promote your blog on Google.

Better blog writing isn’t just about creating good content, particularly if you are working in content marketing. You have to learn how to increase your audience.

The dream is to create a blog that comes first on an authoritative Google page.

Rankings are good, but remember you have to give your readers value for the time they spend digesting your work.

You might think you know how to blog, but my blogging tips can help you get the website traffic you want and your writing deserves.

S isn’t for stupid

Search engines love websites that start with five little letters: https. That “s” means your website is secure and earns it ranking points from Google and Bing.

If you’re asking yourself how to increase blog traffic, the first thing to do is get yourself a secure website as that makes the mission a little bit easier.

Insider knowledge

Do you know what Google searches for as it compiles its results? It’s looking for authoritative, trustworthy, relevant, fresh content. Addressing Google’s needs is key to getting more website traffic.

You get authority by writing at length. When it comes to rankings, keeping it short won’t work – aim for at least 500 words.

Trustworthiness comes from the quality of the links to your writing – who’s giving you online love.

Relevance comes from matching up content to the search query that Google is addressing – more on that in a moment.

And freshness means not neglecting your blogging. Like an exotic flower, it will only grow if you tend it regularly. Google only crawls a site’s content when it’s new. Don’t let it wither.

Know your stuff

Obviously, you’re an expert in your field – otherwise you wouldn’t be writing about it.

But how are your readers going to find your blog on Google or Bing? Ask yourself what search terms you’d use if you were looking for it, then try them out in Google Keyword Planner or a keyword volume tool.

These handy tools will tell you how often each term was searched for in the past month. Keep a note of the relevant high performers – you will need them to ensure your blog gets more hits.

If you don’t have access to a keyword planner, check out the autocomplete answers for your terms in the Google or Bing search bar. They’re listed in order of popularity, so they’ll give you keywords that are alternative forms of the ones you’ve worked up.

You can also keep an eye on what people search for around your terms using Keyword Tool.

More website traffic is write ahead

You know what you’re writing about and you know what people are looking for. Making your keyword research marry the two is, in essence, how to increase blog traffic.

Optimise for those keywords, subtly reusing the top performers throughout the piece. If they’re relevant to the topic you’re writing about, slipping them in will be a breeze.

If they’re not relevant to your topic, then use them as inspiration for another blog.

Finding some of the terms difficult to work in? You can dress some of them up as questions that you then answer. For example, “How to promote your blog” can become “Don’t know how to promote your blog? Well, here are some tips …”

See what I did there?

Remember your headlines are content, too. SEO-checked headlines I could have gone with included “Blogging tips for increasing your search engine visibility” and “How to drive more web traffic to your blog”.

It’s not just about the words, of course, think in terms of a rich media experience. Use video, images and infographics to keep people on your page. The better your blog looks, the more likely people are to stay – and to return. This will support your on-site performance and boost your statistics.

Meta matters

While the search engines are crawling your blog, they are also scrutinising its metadata – the data about what you’ve written.

One way to ensure you grab those bots’ attention and improve your blog promotion is to make sure that you give each post a proper Page Title and a Meta Description in the back end of your website.

This may sound complicated, but they’re just the clickable blue link title and the description below it that come back on a Google search.

Remember those keywords from earlier? Slyly slip the best performers into both the title and the description and you will get your blog read by more people because its visibility becomes greater.
